Just to show that they are really... in numbers there.
I recall the greedy suckers crowding around the one time I went to Nara. Some of them even managed to cause one of our tour group members to fall over backward, either because they shoved so insistently or because she missed her footing trying to take a step back. There was a school tour group nearby, and one of the girls kept shrieking and dodging away as the deer crowded her.
I asked our guide how the women selling the deer crackers managed to keep the deer from eating their stock. She said the vendors just swatted the deer away. :-)
