The subs actually could have a chance at actually damaging the tanks indirectly if they stand at the edge of a cliff and the subs bombard the bottom enough to cause it to collapse uptop.

I don't know if it's represented in the game, but all 3 real submarines had 10cm or 14cm deck guns (I-58's removed in 1944).

Or if the SSVs carry zuiuns instead.

Iku has one in her CG art but was never used due to the gameplay mechanics.

I'm not sure about the max range that tanks have but the 14cm used by Iku has a max range of 16km. Wiki

I get a feeling the max range of the gun and the range the gun could be accurately aimed at with the basic optics (especially under power trying to avoid tank shells) aren't too similar, especially when aiming at a possibly moving tank instead of a ponderous merchantman or disabled warship.

At the very least, the subs have a slightly better chance even if it's very small chance.

I guess the tank has a higher chance of winning because the submarine's deck gun needs to be manned from outside, giving plenty of time until the men get in their positions.

Since the IJN subs are all diesel, though, the panzer girls could just sit and wait for the subs to have to surface.

Plus, the subs all have deck guns, which are probably enough to seriously threaten a tank, although they don't have any real optics, so you could have a semi-decent conflict between the two, although they wouldn't be really using their strengths properly.

Makes me wonder if the IJN subs had their air intakes at the top of the conning tower; if so they could wander around submerged at a minimal speed for quite a long time. (Zero speed was nearly impossible before digital control, as it caused instability and the dive planes lost effectiveness.)

There was the time the USS Borie rammed and got wedged on a U-boat, and engaged in a close quarters small arms battle with it. The U-boat’s crew made several attempts to man the deck guns, but the Borie’s crew kept shooting men off the mounts.

To give a idea on how close quarters the fight was, one German sailor was killed by a knife thrown from the Borie, and at least one German was knocked overboard by a thrown 4" shell casing.
