I've always wondered if Kasen has horn envy. Does she wear the hair buns because she's embarrassed by her tiny horns? Or did she lose her horns in a fight and is ashamed of it?
My headcanon? She hides her horns so that people don't realize that she's an oni. Remember, all of the oni, save for Suika, were reportedly banished to Former Hell. I always imagined her horns were fairly small and curled around themselves (as in post #1351042). I personally believe she either became a hermit because she was ashamed of things the oni did, she was afraid of what the humans would do to her if they found out her true identity, or both.
Like I said, though, those are just my headcanons, and chances are, ZUN will leave Kasen's backstory ambiguous, so there probably won't be anything disputing it.
