Lacking skill in moonruneese it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that was a refrigerator and not a really odd underwear drawer.

I think it's an area thing. In america, I very rarely see refridgerators with the bottom area like that. It's mostly vertical double doors. But I see more of those kinds outside of the united states.

Mine is an old lug that has the freezer on top and fridge on bottom, both doors. The girl I dated whom had too much money had one with the pull-out drawer thing, though. But, yes, otherwise I'm used to seeing side-by-side ones.

Vertical double doors usually consume larger floor space, which is more premium in Japan.
The freezer in the bottom is probably Japanese thing. Ergonomic adjustment to reduce the need to bend down for often accessed things (in fridge). Large part of their population is elderlies after all.

Actually I've seen a lot of newer models with the freezer at the bottom. My friend's new fridge has double doors at the top, but a freezer drawer at the bottom. Quite interesting. Oh and we're in America.

No, they are quite common in the UK too. American fridges and freezers also tend to be much larger than the ones you can get over here too it seems. That said the majority of the population in the UK is considerably less well off than the US (average wage per person is approx US$30k equiv or less) so that's most likely a contributing factor.
