Byakuren became interested in Koishi in Symposium of Post-mythicism when the latter's "closed third eye" was explained as her mind being a state of nothingness, similar to enlightenment. She was recruited to the temple as a laywoman.

At this rate Byakuren is going to end up recruiting half of Gensokyo into her temple. Then again she is a buddhist monk so it makes some sense in that context.

They finally look like total youkai. Not that I have anything to complain about, say for instance, Handsome Wataru's fanwork for the Myouren.

One thing that absolutely infuriates me of that part of Symposium is the fact those three talk shit of Satori compared to Koishi. Because giving yourself a lobotomy is braver than become a hikikomori, it seems. Not that any option of the Komeiji is good...

Except Byakuren has it totally backwards. Instead of no self, Koishi essentially shut herself off from the rest of the world, meaning in her world, she's the only "self". Yet another infuriating thing about the Touhou universe.

It's a common misconception, since there are different ways to achieve enlightenment. And Koishi did the wrong one. It was after Byakuren met Koishi that she noticed this. At least, that's what's implied from HM. You can look forward and hope ULiL got more into this.

It wasn't that bad, really. They're just comparing the two because of the unusualness of Koishi's condition.
I do think that Satori's choice to persevere, even though she's distancing herself, is a more respectable action. And yes, what Koishi did is running away and she can't go back, yet(hopefully).

Really? That's a relief. Any specific bits of dialogue implying that?

Yeah, in one part, I do believe the prejudice against Satori is because most exposition about her is from Kanako, and we all know how dodgy Kanako is toward Satori. It just show that the three are in someway shady, that they know jack of the Underground treaty with both the Aboveground and the Ministry, and yes, in HM Byakuren somewhat realize just how messed up Koishi really is so the possibility of their opinion changing is still open.

Still, I really want for Koishi to heal.

I think it's the part where Byakuren's win quote, where she got weirded out just why Koishi's there fighting for popularity, if she indeed has no sense of self. If Koishi's really achieving enlightenment the way Buddha intended, then even the Mask of Hope will not having any effect because Buddha's enlightenment isn't just about emotion, but also from discipline. The same reason why Tenshi is a poor Celestial.

That's Byakuren and her twisted understanding of buddhist enlightenment. What should you expect from old lady using magic to look like a teenager.
