The "religion" not as in the actual spiritual one. They are referring the the "factions". Apparently there are rivalry between those who eat the bamboo shot chocolate and mushroom chocolate.

They're both made by the same company (Meiji), and the bamboo one (たけのこの里 Bamboo Shoot Village) came out 4 years after the mushroom one (きのこの山 Mountain Mushrooms). It's the same chocolate and cracker, just in a different shape.

It's a bitter feud between some, as depicted here. It's kinda like what Coke vs Pepsi used to be. Or maybe the console wars.
