Well, there's two ways night battles are fought. In the pre-radar/Searchlights era, both sides engage in a confusing clusterf*** where you just hope your ships are individually better than the enemy. The IJN won most of those battles, but the USN thought they won most of them because they're such a mess.
In the post-radar era, the side with better radar curbstomps the other side. This is what happened to Nishimura's Fleet, KMS Scharnhorst, and every time the Regia Marina ended up in night battle.
