Chinese raving aside these ships would need to be heavily rebuilt to operate even VTOL jets. In point of fact some features that could have comparatively easily been added to make such a future conversion easier seem to have been specifically omitted.

Kaga has been doing a lot recently. First that Kaga-misaki. Now having a new born child.

I think this is the NYK ship referred to, Kaga Maru (加賀丸). Launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe yard (yard number 960) in 1965, entered NYK service the following year, converted to a container ship in 1978, and sold for breaking at Kaohsiung in 1986.

There was at least one other previous NYK ship with the name, a steamship, but if the references I'm seeing are all to the same ~6500-ton ship, it predates the aircraft carrier and was also sunk during WWII.

And what makes you so sure that the JMSDF isn't lying about that? If anything, it would be an ace up their sleeve if China and/or Russia start getting too aggressive.

Don't need to lie, the evidence is visible on the fight deck and several other locations, things they'd need to launch and recover VSTOLs just aren't there on the ship

Unless they use hiding-in-wall technique, since deck structural strength doesn't actaully need to be evenly distributed, particularly when operating choppers. It's what I would do just for the hell of it... hidden under a deck plate in a way that doesn't belie the structural difference.

Still, I don't believe anyone outside the far right (a relatively small group, it would have been either much smaller or big enough to warrant a Red Alert 3 style second lesson if Downfall actually happened) in Japan has any expansionist ambitions, and I'm as Chinese as you get without descending into chemtrail-level conspiracy nut territory

Looks like Japan's getting some F-35B for the Izumo-classs after all.
