Dunno about other manufacturers, but for a while now Wacom's been providing optional wireless kits (including batteries) for their tablets.
Right, that explains it then. It's a new Wacom in this comic, after all. My Wacom is so old that I don't think they had such options at all back when I was looking at the models, at least not within the reasonable price range.
