Yes. It is among one of the many MANY stupid things that ship (and crew) has done since it's very first day.

It's entire career history looks like a hastly written Adam Sandler comedy.

1. Wrecked a friendly ship just pulling out of port.

2. Dropped a live depth charge during a test drill within killing distance of the president.

3. While far behind (due to being hit by a rouge wave, somehow), used the president's ship as a practice target for a torpedo drill. Used a live one by accident. Despite this being an emergency worthy of breaking radio silence (as was instructed), they tried to communicate with lights and flags; of which they got the message wrong several times before they finally called them.

There's more, but this is just their first mission EVER. Even then, after this the entire crew was arrested and court marshaled; the first time ever in U.S naval history.

While it's funny (and horrifying) to look at the one that launched to torpedo, I think it's a sort of interesting how the Iowa defeated the threat.

the actual logs don't collaborate most of that and some of it seems to be made up to make the event seem more silly and more juicy but what is true is D porter having engine troubles (and being told to man up about it and get their shit together) and mistakenly launching the fish there are no records of arrests other than the guy who left the primer in who was pardoned by Roosevelt.

Porter finally died when a Kamikaze plane missed it - and it somehow went under the water, and exploded directly below her keel and lifted her out of the water.
