I gave up the level 1 escort a long ago, too much hassle. I prefer to send them alone then wait an hour or less repairing. Carriers attack more than once with the right equipment anyway, so destroyer decoying isn't needed at all either.
It's not like escort ships attract damage, but if you look at it in a statistic way, a lone ship has 100% probability of being targeted, 2 makes 50% each one, 3 makes 33.33%, 4 makes 25% and so on. The problem is sometimes those Lv.1 ships get heavy damaged at the first node when you use them more than once, so you have to keep changing ships every sortie or be a "kuso" and let them sink. There are also very few cases they steal MVP even at Lv 1. In the long term is a big hassle especially when sending each of your ships three times to 1-1 for a maximum as possible moral sparkle.
We're talking about 30 minutes of boring grinding here, an hour when it comes to a combined fleet. I prefer to take a break rather than adding even more time by switching ships. Sometimes it's better to sacrifice repair time in order to keep sanity for the event or extra operations maps.

No, I know there's no mechanic for absorbing hits in 1-1. I just didn't know people do so. I personally never thought of doing it so I didn't know.
It can be useful if you want 5 ships to repair for a really cheap cost for the Dailies.

dem 1m10s or sub 1m repair times
I have a habit of doing all the weeklies on Monday and finish them on Tuesday so my girls are often in hurt. I only need to get them into dock one by one through the week. I know, it's a pretty stupid way of doing things. But works well enough for me.
That "... what? Is this all she's brought?" expression on the I-class is cute as hell.
