Yeah the symbolism here is seriously messed up. The black-red-gold tricolor is the symbol of liberal republicanism and the revolutions of 1848; the Nazis (and for that matter Otto von Bismarck) despised it.

I can find no reference to this outside of a Reddit threads and blog comments. In general it's just untrue that any branch of the Third Reich's armed forces was "anti-Nazi" or "above politics." Such limited opposition to the Nazis as existed was mainly by conservative nationalists who had few principled criticisms – and anyway none of those people liked the black-red-gold tricolor either.
