Technically, it's Iowa's tea. Well, the Crown's tea, grown by the Colonials and taxed by the Crown, only to be delivered back to the Colonials after an absurdly long delay and high markup price.

...I pity the tea leaves. They lose either way.

Um, just no. I can't believe the stuff people are taught.

01/ The Tea was grown in the Far East.

02/ The Tea was very popular in America --- that little shit Washington drank it daily during and after the War.

03/ The East India Company had a monopoly of import to Britain; American companies took it to America, and the soon to be revolutionaries were smugglers making money from crime. Plus they didn't think they should pay any taxes ever, despite paying the lowest taxes of anywhere in the world. Britain cut taxes on tea, and finally the price was lower than the smugglers' price.

    04/ The smugglers went spare.

05/ The new free nation imposed very high taxes and customs duties, and punished smugglers mightily.

The tea leaves did nothing wrong. #tealeavesmatter

Tea is so important in the British empire that they sold drugs and declare wars to buy it.

Little known side of the story, actually. Interesting to read about. Although, let's not call anyone a bad guy here with missing info.

Britain forced the Indian dealers into an exclusive only agreement and imposed taxes on the tea they had to sell to them only. This caused smugglers on all sides to profit big on cheap Dutch tea. Especially as tea demand boomed in the colonies.

When Britain tried to stamp out the smugglers by repealing taxes and offering a refund to their Indian tea pals, they added taxes to the otherwise untaxed American destined tea export to balance the books.

It was also a display of power. Again, American-british paid virtually no tax prior.

But the Americans took the whole thing the wrong way and flew into protest. There's also the whole "breach of rights" thing that gets real messy.

    In rough summary at least.

Tell that to the people of Puerto Rico.

(And the District of Columbia, to some extent.)

I went to the District of Communism (s/) once. Such a pit. I never went back unless I absolutely had to. You would think the capital of a country would be a little nicer, but nooo... First night we stayed there, my roommate went out drinking. Two hours later he came back saying some thug held him up and took his wallet (one reason I never took up drinking). Hilarious in hindsight, but still irritating. None of us could carry there of course, even though we were certified for carry in nearly all of the states.
