    I wondered about that as well. The artist has used this character before and was always paired with a girl, but the only info given by the artist for this post was a single word: [失う] (loss, to lose, or to part with).

    So speculation is left to the viewer. I kind of like that honestly.

    I suppose the statues or other symbolism could imply something too. Maybe gods of mourning? I'm not one to know much about actual Japanese culture and spirituality but maybe there's some clue here.
