I think the fact that he's not the main character is actually what makes him such an impressive character.
He was, ultimately, just bullshitting.
That was his power, the effect that he had on everyone, and the reason he was what could bring everyone together: he just faked being braver and more confident than he actually was. In dying before being exposed, he became a martyr and legend of fearlessness that united everyone, when if he'd ever lived to slip, he would be a broken pedestal.
His defining moment came from turning back when his father went to explore the surface, and his shame in his cowardice drove all his future actions. When he sees that his father died not long after that point, anyway, he realizes he has nothing but that bullshitting false confidence left. Part of why he focuses on Simon is simply because in Simon he sees that the confidence might actually become real.
Well, in addition to all "four sounds like death" (shi/死) superstitions, 四 itself even looks like an iei-style funeral photo、so maybe it's not a coincidence...
