The moment I saw these two together, I immediately thought of the movie "The Hunt For Red October" where the titular RUSSIAN submarine uses an experimental propulsion system called a Caterpillar.
It's a Cold War thing. I bet Claverhouse was thinking of the opening of the movie when Sean Connery was taking the submarine out of docking for their first deployment.
