Hiei was also got fucked because she had these rounds in her shell hoists when a surface action began, they proved utterly worthless bouncing off the barrettes of heavy cruiser San Fransisco at point blank ranges and the lack of any effective battleship caliber hits liking being a key reasons she was able to continue in the battle to end up tearing open Hiei's hull and flooding the steering compartment which doomed the ship.
Ironically these where actually actively detrimental to the ships AA when used, since most AA positions were open large portions of them could not be manned when the main battery was in operation due to blast danger. Thus by stupidly attempting to use the main guns during anti-aircraft operations the Japanese ships actually suppressed their own AA guns, and this they did for absolutely zero gain. Allied pilots referred to the shells as fireworks, pretty to look at and completely harmless. It's highly debatable if these rounds brought down a single plane in the entire war, and if they did it was literally a single plane, there is exactly ONE loss considered to have had some probability of originating from these shells.
These shells were indeed a highly effective weapon... for attacking allied aircraft.
You can't talk about how the type 3 shell fared in battle without bringing up the last battle of our youngest sister Kirishima, the Naval Battle of Guadacanal, dess...So this type 3 shell hits aircraft by bursting in mid-air, scattering incendiary fragments over a wide angle, dess.By the way, Kirishima had type 3 shells loaded because her original mission was to bombard Henderson Field. The type 3 shell made for an effective surface bombardment weapon because it scattered incendiary fragments over a wide area, dess. The incendiary explosives in the type 3 shells set the enemy ship ablaze!!! But the type 3 had little penetrating power, so the battleship escaped.Or so I've heard, but just what kind of mechanism can make a shell work against aircraft?Hiei is a bad girl, dess!"mmmlolololololo u gotta equip type 3 shell for AA lololololo"
Japanese snowclone, and apparently common advice during Fall 2013.About the Type 3 Shell
Based on publication date, this strip is likely a reference to the debut of mass Type 3 Shell use during E-4 of the Fall 2013 event against Airfield Princess.OH... how could you not know how the Kongou class's old buddy works!?u missed lolBoomBoomBoomDetonation!Kirishima, who was carrying type 3 shells at the time, kept some loaded when she dueled with an enemy battleship, dess...
The USS South Dakota. It would have taken Kirishima too long to reload AP or HE shells.I can fight, even with just type 3! Eat this!!Hot!Hot!Like thisOnee-sama, are you sneaking in some marketing!?It's just unreasonable to fire a normal shell at a plane and expect it to hit.Incidentally, the manga included with "KanColle Models" sold by F-toys includes a story of Haruna and I succeeding with the type 3 shell (and type 0 HE)!
These manga extras were drawn by Freddy. The story is likely the bombardment of Henderson Field by Kongou and Haruna after the Battle of Cape Esperance and prior to the Battle for Henderson Field on land.
