How is it that Shibafu's work (usually) look better when he's doing these collabs? Do people photoshop and enchance his work? Or does he just work better when he's not actually do it for the game itself(like some other artist)?

I think that's very much the case, and people won't let go of the whole potato thing.

It doesn't help that most of his official art was during KC's (and thus his) early days and it's not very often his ships get Kai Nis (thus new art)

I don't know. Even his most recent official arts don't usually strike me as WOW compare to his other works that's not official.
Many of the time his works look much much when it's outside the game, even for his newer art.
It might be because they seem to not look as stiff, or they seem more colorful. I don't really know.

But, as I mention, it could be that it's because his artwork is being enhanced by others or that outside of the official works he has more freedom and just work better. Who knows.
