I remember a quote that went somewhere along the lines of "Bravery is not the absence of fear, it's overcoming your fear. The absence of fear is idiocy."

Maybe single-minded devotion to one's goal can be respectable in some sense, but it's basically like an addict who keeps going for their drug even knowing it's about to kill them.
