The word means "someone I feel sorry for". It's actually the same root as "cute" -- the word is "kawaisou". It's more like, "that poor thing". The implication is that since she's often depicted as short and flat... I think you know where I'm going with this.
The word "pitiful" has a very different context in English, so even though it's technically correct, the feeling is wrong. I'll fix up the translation later.
I have to say, given the intended meaning, it's not an inaccurate statement. When I write stories that include Marisa, I do give her moments of glory, because I love her and she is awesome, but littered all throughout are those niggling doubts she has of herself, which she displays more and more in canon as time goes on. She's such a strong character, but her obvious flaws make it really fun to think of her as an underdog to root for, because she has a huge hill to climb. She's certainly still a top-tier character, but she's a badass woobie. The more I read about her, the more it starts to look like her confidence isn't entirely unshakable, and even if she outwardly pretends otherwise, she doesn't have a high opinion of herself. Given her feats, that's actually kind of sad. Reimu has no such doubts of herself, but Marisa has plenty, and to me, I feel she goes out of her way to prove herself so she can try and fill that hole in her heart, and prove to herself that she is actually a badass like Reimu. She succeeds time and again, but it feels like she'll never totally get rid of her low self-esteem. It's a fun part of her personality to explore.
