For some reason I do wish there is this Time Machine to avert her species extinction...

Together with introduced predators and nest destruction, the reason why dodos went extinct is they had no fear of humans at all...

To be fair, a whole species only populous enough to inhabit just the common areas of a small volcanic island is already in a terribly precarious position.

Indeed. Twas what happened really happened to the hobbits, after all.

Doesn't excuse those that wiped them out.

I was sure that was interbreeding that resulted in the British people as we know them today.

Twas talking about the "real" hobbits: H. florensis and pretty much the entire ecosystem it lived with vanished wen the volcanic island it lived on went boom... as volcanoes in that part of the world are wont to do. Just had the bad luck of evolving on an island that was just waiting to kill almost everything on it.

Or H. Florensis was a false positive from non-fossilized skeletons of juvenile orangutans.

Not bloody well likely. Basically the entire ecosystem it had evolved with went extinct with it in the same event.

The species was actually named "Great Auk" and was scattered all over Northern Europe, Iceland, Greendland and Canada. In fact, they were hunted to extinction first by the Native Americans, Canadian colonists, meanwhile they were being hunted to near extinction in the rest of the northern located countries.

You are talking about events that happened hundreds of years ago. But to be fair the names of the guys that killed the final pair is listed in the wiki article about the "Great Auk" and I am equally angry at them. >:

And against what stories tell you. No, it wasn't Scandinavian colonists that hunted them to extinction in Iceland early in Icelandic history. The species actually survived all the way up to 1844... or until final pair was killed by greedy arseholes that don't deserve to be named (check the wikipedia article if you want to know their names).

Even when authorities in Iceland, in Britain and in most of Europe had put right out ban on any hunting of the species. Hell, it was as early as in the mid-1500 that the bird got official protection from hunting, with Britain (and other countries) making it a serious criminal offense in late 1700.

In fact, Iceland is the last country the birds lived at... and it all ended because of greed... though the attempts to re-ignite the species had already failed at that point as the species had genetically gotten too small to sustain itself.

So yeah, even as far back as in the 1500 we were trying to prevent species from going extinct with the rich and greedy... and ironically, museums being the catalysts for many of those animals' extinction. :/
