USSR ice cream, пломбир, was the best ice cream in the whole wide world. So delicious it's indescribable. They don't make ice cream like that anymore. This barbaric post-USSR culture was not ready for the blessing of AC, take them away, give them back only when we become more civilized.

Russia being land of eternal winter is such a stereotype. But I agree. Summers here is hot, especially lately, with climate change and all. But not long, maybe one month of really insufferable weather. Rest of the year is from mild +23-25 to bone-chilling -30. So, don't put the damn AC in your house, you can survive one month, it's not a big deal, buy a simple fan, it'll help a lot. But I heard that japanese summer is the real hell on earth. Air is still and walking on the street is like going through hot jello. Can't even imagine, my body starts melting at +27.

And yes, as a foreigner I've always been amazed at pictures of boxes perched precariously on window-ledges in NY. If I lived in America I would definitely need it anytime it went over 55 F, but also AC is a tad noisy for we aliens.

No one I know uses the boxes, the AC and heating is built into the house most places. Along with a wonderful invention known as insulation, it means heating and air are both largely noise free.
Actually there were air conditioners in USSR, but they weren't for private use. Window units assembled in Baku (БК-2000,2500) were installed in some administrative buildings and sanatoriums. Some might be functioning even now. Most probably american and japanese reverse engineered designs.

When it comes to whether a country has "Eternal Winter" or not (Eternal Summer is just being near the equator, though...) it's worth keeping in mind that a lot depends upon distance from the ocean. The ocean regulates temperatures, making seasonal variations less dramatic, so anywhere inland tends to have more fearsome winters, but also hotter summers.

That was one of the things they actually list as a problem with the notion of Communism over here. They had apartments with giant heating systems which didn't have individual room settings, they had a single, centrally-controlled setting. Because more hot air reaches the rooms nearer the heater than the rooms the furthest away, either the closest rooms could be set to roast its residents, or the furthest residents could be left to freeze... so they went with the "roast the closest residents" option, and those people just opened their windows in the middle of Winter to let all the hot air out, thus ruining the efficiency of the system as a way to keep themselves from frying in Winter. It was one of those examples of how the individual was forced into doing things against the communal good.
I keenly remember this one, however, because I learned about it in college, where my college dorm (constructed by an alumni of the college that went on to be a prison architect, no less), had exactly the same problem. I was in the room directly under the heater, with the TA that controlled the thermostat being a floor below and several rooms down from me. My only way to survive was to regulate how much I opened the crack in the window.

This month, in this part of California, we are expected a daily high of 30-30.5 C...every day for July and August with it possibly lasting until October, and starting as early as May. But it very, very rarely ever gets below 0 C here. At most -5 C. It snows maybe once every 11 years.

Japanese summer is hot and dry. But the worst part came from rain. The temperature can drop drastically when there is heavy rain, and after rain it becomes humid.
But the worst summer IMO is Southeast country, the temperature always fucking lukewarm and damp. And there are only two kinds of weather: Rain and not rain.
