That stoic kaga feeding akagi is a sight to see..

Anyhow, I don't understand the joke (I'm stupid).. I can't seem to follow RJ's language style in panel 2 (she said they were cleaning the garden?), and Houshou's explanation in panel 3 seems really unrelated.

ChibiAkaKaga couldn't wait for the food to actually roast up in the leaves, so they snatch it right out of them - which is one of the stereotypical martial-arts training methods (you have to move fast enough to not suffer burns). It's traditional in Japan to use swept-up leaves to burn them to roast potatoes; the chestnuts will be on coals or similar.

The word that RJ uses for 'training' refers specifically to ascetic/martial-arts training, not vocational.

Ahhh that explanations makes sense, the conversation between RJ and Houshou in panel 2 confused me, What I get is:

    Panel 2:
RJ: why did you roast the potatoes and chestnut? weren't you cleaning the garden?
    Panel 3:
houshou : Akagi and kaga interested in the potatoes and chestnuts, so they roasted it

Maybe that question from RJ in panel 2 makes me confused, is it a dialect thing?

Weren't y'all roastin' up a storm in the garden before?
They took a great interest in them, so while it was heating up, they made their move...
I bought some roasted potatoes and roasted chestnuts!
    Training!?
    Hnn?
    Why'd 'ya do that for?
    Eh?
    Well.... actually...
    Once you grow up
That it was! It's still so early for them to be doing that, right?
    BWAAA!?
