Plus right after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, and retailers have to already be fully braced for the Christmas rush by then or they lose huge profits.
There really isn't a lot of inertia for holiday seasons.

Yeah, Thanksgiving was swallowed whole by Christmas a long time ago, and the INSTANT that Halloween is over, the fake cobwebs come down, and tinsel goes up. You buy for Thanksgiving in October, to the side of the Halloween candy, buster!
It got insane starting a few years ago. I felt broken when I came into an art'n'craft store the week after october and saw that every aisle, except for a small section of one for thanksgiving, was already stocked to the brim with christmas decorations

Going on a kinda non-sequitur tangent over here, some mall at Singapore is putting up decorations and promotions.. FOR CHINESE NEW YEARS. Now that's excitement.
Meanwhile in the Philippines as soon as September 1 you can already hear Christmas songs on radios and some people have already decorated their house...Oh Philippines never change and your festivals.
