    Don't be fooled - that isn't actually Magikarp meat, the head and tail are just there for decoration.

    Carp are whitefish.

    But what about koi? Which their name references in the Japanese version, said name being 'koiking'.

    Koi are a domesticated variety of carp, specifically Cyprinus rubrofuscus if Wikipedia is to be believed.
