That's surprising. I'd have thought everybody had such adults or older children around who would tell that to kids. Wouldn't it actually be a pity not to have your parents or others try to fool you when you are a child?

I think it's a case-by-case basis; my parents for example just straight up told me I would choke if I'm not careful. Anything smaller like watermelon seeds are fair game though.
