Sad that the devs had to make another art revision again.
This is the new design of the old Nagato.
The artist drew her after he was told by the devs that they wont use his work around 5-6 months ago
All arts that come with this pic were released in the artist twitter yesterday when the devs fully reveal the new Nagato
The artist pretty much wants to destroy the devs reputation by making them look like jerks who ditch his 'great works'
The truth is the actual old design got shot down… becuz its quality is not upto expectation and need to be redesigned (this happens to many girls in AL prior to their release)
This pic along with the others caused alot of drama in the official twitter yesterday…
FYI, the artist quits, the devs didn't fire him. His tweet says the devs wants "popular characters drawn by in house artist". And this art wasn't the original version, he redrew it (when he redrew it was unknown)

why
Nagato is Yoshinori's
He's referring to Intrepid (and the potatoes). People still can't get over it
They can go fuck themselves, I'm damn sick of the potato drama.
Agree. Those entitled "where is Iowa Mk.II w/tomahawk missiles?" muricans Trump supporters are annoying. Their economy has been in crisis for the last decades and yet still behave as if everything should be handed to them in a silver plate. A minority is ruining America's reputation.
The game is Japanese, the Japanese like the art. Why can't they just respect other people ways specially when they aren't the target audience? "I don't feel patriotic with Shibafu's art" they say. Always complaining for the most uncommon and out of place reasons.

Really? I always thought that was tongue-in-cheek. As for Iowa drama, there was controversy over her design since it was very stereotypical, but I think people have mostly warmed up to it to the point where no one complains anymore. And there was a stink over Iowa being hit with a penalty for equipping her own guns. I forget if that was a bug but that issue was actually addressed and the penalty was removed.
Not much, I think. There were some people, who were very vocal about Sammy B. looking "not enough American", but it didn't turn into Intrepid level of drama.

And yet nothing is done about Enka and his inability to draw a pose right (see the AL cranes and you'd see some posing issues)
And putting aside the foul deed, I don't think he had a chance to really redo the design; but rather flat out snubbed (no idea when the decision for the new artist was made so I can't say how badly they wanted said artist to do Nagato); though I can't say the new ones are exactly radically better (better drawn yes, but loli mikos being a B7 battleships...)
Though this whole thing basically orphaned Shouhou (sure she's not super popular but an issue of KC's is the rising number of orphaned shipgirls, some of which quite popular), which barring a new artist redo, may end up being a blemish on AL's reputation.

The whole Intrepid fiasco was bizarre.
Draw an American carrier a little "Plain Jane" and people flip their lid.
That's not even a commentary on the individual artworks. They're fine. It's just people being bafflingly upset for seemingly arbitrary reasons.
Also it was Zeco's first shipgirl for KC and there are some promising traits so people are giving him a pass and hoping that he does better next time.
Shibafu, a long time artist, on the other hand has gotten a recent habit of sloppiness which only worsens the anti-potato rage. Thus people aren't so willing to give him a pass. Most of the rage is in part due to being too used to Yoshinori's style of things and the other being Shibafu's iffy job of drawing her.
As for this particular incident, the rage fanwise is mainly based on how 2 of the big seven are lolis something which triggers many, being used to how KC does things (big ships being big girls) mixed with how Mutsu is getting lolified and how some are annoyed due to being attached to mini-samurai AL Nagato due Hisahiko's works.
There is also the lingering worry about AL going too loli (at least with Japan/sakura empire), though that ignores the fact that other recent things had non-lolis (Frozen Crown, fallen wings, Honolulu, Choukai)
And yet nothing is done about Enka and his inability to draw a pose right (see the AL cranes and you'd see some posing issues)

I dont see any wrong with Shou though but i cant say the same for Zui. Still, im impressed by his designs
About the artist, i think so too, he didnt get a change to redesign Nagato. The decision was made about half a year ago and he quits since, but he didnt let it go. Now, he dug his own grave, we wont see any of his work again in AL and Shouhou was sadly orphaned. But i dont understand why new artist cant redo the orphaned works... because of popularity or familiarity?
In case of Nagato, i dont like the old Nagato to be honest, not even the redesigned one, but i love the new Nagato. I really love KC Nagato (especially her Kai2) because she looks strong and fits to be a flagship, but she is also the one who sacrifices her secret for the good of her people when the tragedy struck in 1923, The Great Kantou Earthquake.
From what i read, Nagato real top speed was a national secret (it was published as 23 knots). When the earthquake struck, her commanding officers, knowing the risk of getting executed, decided to sail at top speed (26 knots) to send disaster reliefs as fast as possible.
Thats why im pretty much ok and love to see her as a Miko, perhaps as a loving and caring side of the strong and reliable KC Nagato. Her rig still looks intimidating and powerful though.

Enka does have a decent eye for design yes but with Shou's pose, I feel if not technically flawed, comes off as trying to be eye-catching and not quite doing so (and makes it nigh-impossible to tell her figure). A similar "trying and not getting it right" vibe can be seen in Ranger's remodel. Though I guess this might go to so how the devs consider the cranes not to be as important as other japanese ships (last I checked they have yet to get any sort of skins)
In case of KC, it's familiarity and Kadokawa being cheap to put an artist on the task. AL Shouhou being orphaned for the time being isn't too big of a deal for the time being (no second remodels or not super popular enough for skins). Who knows what will happen here.
Well on the change I'm a tad mixed on Nagato, though I'm less amused with what happened with Mutsu (what's wrong with a teenageish Miko?) Though I will say if the Yamato class ends up loli, things will not be pretty.

But that's a nice historical story.
I wouldnt want the Yamato class to be loli... I hope their designs will contrast with the Nagato class
Big, Strong, intimidating, but barely know anything (not as much as 3d5 though)
I hope the devs make Yamato and Nagato rivals too, should be interesting given how an inexperienced girl got promoted to be the new flagship
I would love to see doujin of old and new Nagato fighting/fucking.
This old Nagato is a doujin gold mine. Rejected by the "gods" since birth, raised secretly by her angry parent with the sole purpose of taking revenge on the gods, showing the world that she's the worthy and better Nagato, and that the gods were wrong.
On the other hand, new Nagato seems to be an innocent and timid child, struggling with the burden of being the Sakura Empire's flagship. Her normal art seems rigid, uneasy and soulless, because it's intended. You'd know it if you can read the description.
I think it's a perfect combination, hope we can see this idea being explored in the future, probably after they reveal Nagato's lines and plots.

So basically sounds like during the normal process of brain storming designs for a new character they had him do a concept, decided they wanted something else/didn't like it, obviously didn't use it and he got butt mad about it? This doesn't really sound like the devs did anything "wrong" at all. I'm sure it was frustrating for HIM, but deciding not to use a given take and having someone else do a different riff on the same general concept isn't really unethical or even all that are during development of a characters look.
That said I do like the old design better, she's more properly clothed (a key reason I hate KC Nagato design too) and her rigging isn't the width of a semi and completely disproportionate to her frame. I'd probably have been on board with the artist if he just confined his grumbling to "I think mine was better" instead of trying to make it out like everyone was against/out to get him.
I like the new design more than the last one, I think that the namesake of "Nagato" should be someone that feels overpowering, confident, someone who is deserving of the Title, Big Seven. The old art for AL nagato was underwhelming in demonstrating the power house that was a Big Seven, and the other Sevens in AL are show this off nicely in either their pose or their armaments ( my personal fave is Maryland ). The re-design fixed everything, her katana not being obscured, the thick armor and armament on her sides, and her pose that says "you dare challenge me?" ; Her being a loli really doesnt matter, I actually welcome it since the other 5 Sevens are well endowed, it gives a really nice contrast ( plus AZ's IJN ships are just loli-fied ). All in all, just a really nice re-design that fixed problems.

S.P.Requiem summed up what happened perfectly in this post
Nagato is the miko of a huge magical sakura tree, she has magical powers beyond shipgirl powers (probably explains the floating shoulder pads). So she's heavily protected as a symbol of power and was never able to participate in actual battles. Until Mikasa broke her chains and showed her how fun it is to blow up Sirens.
The old Nagato on the other hand, looks like a battle-hardened warrior.

Suddenly a mental image of Washington flashed in my mind when I read that. (CN is getting Nagato later BTW, we are now hugging subs playing with new ASW mechanics)

I will state that you should put that in spoilers.
Isn't that just a matter of which one comes first? Whether the illustration drawn first then the description thought up later to fit with it or the description was written first then the illustration drawn according to it?

Hilariously for all the complaints about IJN being lolis, the Nagato event introduced a number of non-loli DDs; first being Kawakaze who looks mid-late teens. And the Asashio class DDs introduced in it are both rather shapely, especially Ooshio (the furthest one could say is shortstack) (same goes for their sister who was a monthly login ship)

Also now that the event was out, you can see how this design of Nagato doesn't fit the plot at all. So that may be a reason they dumped it as well.
I suspect it might be more they did things to suit the design (the artist of her current design seems pretty favored as most of his designs have been SRs+ of some effectiveness) than the other way around. But I have found, having read the translation of main story bits, that the Sakura empire always had some religious elements; just not quite expressed by many ships.

That can go either way, sometimes a character is based around concept art, sometimes the art is based around a character concept. However on balance I'd say the later is actually more common.
All that said I still don't like the design they went with all that much and do think this was "finalized" alternate version is significantly better.
