... I demand to know how Ooyodo is surviving in that room while still in full dress. Even Admiral Hisamura gave in!

Not sure what half-nude version of nudist is, but I'm pretty sure it's not half-nakedist, fixed.

Though I'm also wondering about the availability of windows... or even shading for that matter, since up to about 29 degrees is tolerable to a lot of groups without sweating if one is so calm their basal metabolism is lowered, and if you vent during the night then proper shading can seal off the windows after the outside gets hotter than inside and it'll still be just like 29-30 degrees inside when the sun goes down long enough for the night to get cooler...

EDIT: INDOORS 29, Outdoors 35-40 ya dolts!

Hisamura isn't ashamed of his body (he's Army), and Ooyodo is too attached to protocol.

Oh right, nudist, that's the word.

since up to about 29 degrees

Japan's been officially in a heatwave, we're getting close to the 40s now (in some places). (And as some people always put out - yes, there are hotter places. But Japan isn't used to this kind of heat, so it's very hot to them.) Even the nights are hot...

At least it's getting a little cooler now that we're heading into August.

For Japan should be like being in hell. Where I live (a Caribbean port) the normal temperature all year long is 32-34 °C. I don't get affected by that type of heat. Instead, I'm weak to the cold.

Doesn't wrapping a cold towel around the head is more effective way to prevent heatstroke than being half naked?

Hot and humid air is stifling and does nothing to help against the heat. When perspiration just pools around the crevasses on your body instead of evaporating? That's where the fun, fun game of heatstroke begins.

Wow! Ôyodo sure is cheap when it comes to basic stuff such as air conditioning, isn't she?

Cooling the surface of a limited portion of the body is only going to have a marginal effect on core temperature, and the capacity of a damp towel to absorb heat is fairly limited. It could also fairly quickly become counter-productive since once the towel is even luke warm it's probably acting more like an insulated hat preventing the large network of blood vessels in the head from actually functioning effectively.

You're built with evaporate cooling, and for that method surface area is key. Really the more of your skin exposed unimpeded to moving air in high temperatures the better you 'radiators' will function (assuming a steady supply of replacement fuilds of course).

I meant 30 degrees indoors. Which can be achieved even at like 37 degrees outdoor temperature pretty reliably...

Oi Sara, pretty sure you 'helped yourself' to Hisamura which means you're already used to seeing his toned bo- oh wait, the others who see him strip off his top after exercise keep squeeing...

The idea of the towel is to increase the surface area evaporating, as your skin doesn't tend to have little fluffy loops. Or there are those "shammy" towels that have many tiny pores specific to the task. The most effective method is to wrap it completely around your neck (not draped over the shoulders like Hisamura) to cool your major blood vessels and to regularly remoisten it.

Those cooling towels are somewhat popular over here too, but the traditional look is still just a bog-standard towel around the neck - and even then, that's just for wiping away sweat, not for cooling.

See, that's all well and good, but he specifically and explicitly gives "taking measures against heatstroke" as his reason for why he's going completely topless. Read: He believes he can suffer a heatstroke from the current conditions he's in. Him. I don't know about you, but so far he's never lied about anything to the shipgirls, so I'm gonna take him at his word that it really is too hot even for a nigh-superhuman military man like him.

If it's made of wool or similarly insulating materials, I'd believe it. And as I said, he's Army - protocol takes a back seat to practicality.

You're still not addressing the elephant in the room: A borderline superhuman admits that the heat is too much for even him to wear his uniform, and yet Ooyodo not only seems completely unbothered by the same heat (she's barely even sweating!), she acts as if it's preposterous that anyone's health could be at risk in the face of this heat.

    How does she do it?!

Non-regulation cooling pads applied vigorously under her clothes, of course. And cooling sprays (that you spray directly onto clothing), those are also a thing in Japan.

You barely sweat when you're suffering severe heatstroke too - she may be there already, and she can be repaired with buckets, unlike Hisamura.

Plus, he's got PTSD (which is why he's so stoic) - he's tree superhuman, just very fit. And not held up by the need to maintain his dignity unlike an officer who started off in the academy straight from college.

She was a very-late-model cruiser originally designed as a command ship. It's not a terrible stretch to assume she has a far more efficient environmental control system than a borderline-antiquated carrier like Sara.

OK, this is an acceptable explanation.

Loving this comment section for choosing to focus on discussions of biology and thermodynamics instead of the sheer amount of hawt-ness exuded by Hisamura and Saratoga.

Well, this amount of hawt-ness is pretty normal whenever Munmu-san does a fanservice scene. I'm guessing we ran out of unique ways to react to it for the moment.

Colombian here xD. Hot, humid climates are severe, but here in my hometown you can get sunburned even while you are not sunbathing. The heat is so strong you don't feel like doing anything on the dry season (almost equivalent to summer and autumn, in the Equator there are only 2 seasons, dry and rainy).

But somehow you get used to it. The human body has impressive adaptability after all.

summer in the Philippines this year reached up to 43 degrees. not that i experienced it much. i spend 6 days in a fully air conditioned workplace. come weekends though...i was barely able to keep my shirt on. if it weren't for that fact that i hate having no shirt on i would've stripped down to my undies.
