Is there something I'm missing about why Yamato is cosplaying Iowa?

    Possibility 1: Yamato/Iowa fusion dance.
    Possibility 2: Yamato/Iowa had a kid.

    Oh, now I get it.

Yamato is playing the part of Mecha-King Ghidorah in the battle versus the rampaging Godzillasaurus.

As far as I can gather, Yamato is supposed to be playing a sort of role to the ship that wounded and almost kills Godzillasaurus in the Heisei-era movie Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. It was a time travel sequence that took place during WWII sometime just before the end of the conflict between the US and Japan, but I have no idea why Yamato is dressed as Iowa here, nor do I know why it's a battleship since it was supposed to be a cruiser if I remember correctly, that wounded the big guy.

Still, love the reference I never thought I'd see.

I can see it as the american version of the early Godzilla movies when they added segments with americans actors into the movie.

I'm guessing that they use a Iowa-class to take the role as Yamato. To note, it wasn't the last time they did this.

At least the model Toho used seems to be pretty clearly intended to be an Iowa-class battleship, though it seems to sport a secondary battery 12.7 cm/40 Type 89s, its turrets&barrettes also seem to be rather similar to those of Yamato-class, and its hull shape is more in line with Yamato's than Iowa's. My guess is that they took a model of Yamato and modified it to look like Iowa at a distance.

So, basically Yamato cosplaying as Iowa then. Bingo, I think you got it.

Representation of an alternate history in which Yamato survived the war and was ceded to the US as reparations?
