She could be wrong in her assumption that all of Hisamura's shipgirls are Armory Types, you know. More importantly, though, is that she did say that "Heavy Individual Personality Shifts" affect both types of shipgirl; it's just that in the Volunteer Type's case, it frequently if not always involves their original personality as a human re-emerging in full force, even if it severely clashes with their normal shipgirl personality (as seen in this Kongou's case; it would be blasphemous for a regular Kongou to express any sort of negativity about her verbal tic, let alone at such a level).

Well, it doesn't really mandate it being Kongou per se, it's a little more generic than that (What with it just meaning children from another family, not linked directly by blood.); it could well be other Kongous (Or even just others in the Kongou-class) - or it really could just mean other shipgirls in general. (Kongou's line does certainly seem to imply he's talking about other, unrelated Kongous though.); putting in 'other Kongous' directly removes the slight sense of ambiguity and indirectness that the line has to it; It's a phrase also used by mothers scolding children, after all - viz. "Why don't you just go be someone else's child, then!". Leaving it at just 'others' somewhat preserves it.

(Unless it's being used for the "Original Character do not steal" kind of aspect, but that seems rather unlikely.)

Given the setting, I just assumed he's referring to the Kongou in Natsuki's naval base. He could be comparing this Kongou with the other Natsuki shipgirls, but that seems like an odd comparison to make given the myriad of personalities we have in Kancolle.

Regardless though, I doubt he would refer to his other shipgirls as よそ rather than うち.

Certainly, よその子 couldn't really be referring to his own ships, they'd all be in his in-group and thus exempt. (Being part of his 'family')

Mainly, I just wanted to leave the ambiguity inherent in the sentence intact (as it's entirely feasible for the sentence to have included 'Kongou' in the original Japanese without even making it odd to read. And while one would probably assume that it does refer to Kongous in general (be it the Hisamura Fleet's or some other), it's not explicitly stated in the Japanese - hence the middle option of 'other ones'.

1) This isn't the first time I've translated commentaries on Danbooru, and in fact this is the first time I've messed up the translation this badly. My unsureness about the end result's accuracy wasn't that big; I'm just a perfectionist and thus have a habit of seeking out second opinions from those with more experience than myself.

2) My translation seemed quite reasonable considering the context provided by the comic; if you look at previous comments, people have been getting Black Lagoon vibes from Kongou's "original personality" behavior.

3) For the record, "Funato" is as valid as a reading of 舟渡 as "Funawatari". Other possible readings are "Funawatashi" and "Funado".

He was explicitly called "Funawatari" (in katakana even!) by Iowa in post #3126009. It's an exceedingly rare name in modern Japan, with around 1,700 people in total having it in the whole country.

I don't care how 'experienced' you are, or how reasonable it may have sounded to you, this is just a critique of your work here, and your translation for the commentary is completely off. Almost nothing is correct. The only part you got right is Kongou's little comment at the end (which I quite liked, to give credit where it's due).

That's the least of the problems. Note that I didn't point out any specific errors in this post (unlike the next one) because, well, they were too many (it was the whole thing, basically. I will though, soon on the next post to keep things coherent). In any case I would have let Funado pass if it wasn't for WhiteCrow's comment calling it to attention, so I went back to that page to make sure of the name.

Despite NNescio's use of the word 'misinterpreted', context isn't the problem here; it's the grammatical structure of the sentence.

Take the following for example:

そして現在、その「布教」に精を出している困ったオジサンデース。

You went with:

Nowadays, this old man is troubled by the spirit they gained from their "missionary work" DEESU.

He went with:

And now, he's a hopeless old git who gives his all into 'proselytizing' his fetish... DEESU.

The takeaway here is how the 困った in 困ったオジサン is actually an adjective for troublesome (people) as you can see here (excerpt provided below).

「困った人」とは、どんな人のことでしょうか。やってほしいことをやらない人、あるいは、やってほしくないことをやる人。そんな人には、いったいどう対応したらいいのかわかりませんよね。でも、もうそんな人たちの犠牲にならなくていいのです!

With that in mind, we now realize it's actually a three-parters instead of two:

Also, you would usually need a noun preceding に困る for it to mean "is troubled by (noun)". Given that 精を出す is a verb that meant "give it your all" / "work hard" / etc, 精を出しているに困る wouldn't make sense unless you slip in a noun there, like 精を出している艦娘たちに困る which would mean "troubled by the shipgirls who're working hard (at something)".

Thus, the only way your translation would be accurate is if the sentence went something along the line of:

そして現在、その「布教」に精を出している(艦娘たちの勢いに困っている)困ったオジサンデース。

I'm pretty bad at EN -> JP translation so the sentence above ended up more convoluted than it needs to be, but I hope you can see why your translation wouldn't make sense grammatically.

Edit: I didn't know 困った人 is a thing either before this, so it's a learning experience for you and me.
