Eyewitnesses apparently reported that there was a explosion and the building was rapidly engulfed in flames. Currently confirmed 20 dead, but BBC is reporting it is at least 26. To put that in perspective of the studio, the-japan-news.com reports that KyoAni has about 150 employees. That would put this as having lost 1/5th of their employees.

Didn't that specific studio employ 75? Or do I have the number wrong?

There were some 70 people in that building (their 1st Studio building) at the time, but KyoAni also has a head office, a 2nd Studio building, a Tokyo Office, and the Animation DO building in other locations.
Still puts about half their employees in their 1st Studio, which should show how important it was to them.
