Earlier in the story, the head priest's apprentice insists on going up the mountain where the yamanba lives to look for chestnuts, and he gives him three ofuda to protect himself. As he runs away from her, with the first ofuda he creates the illusion of his voice to distract her, with the second one a large river to stop her in her tracks, and with the third a wall of flames.
