Not sure if Kouhai-chan is annoyed at what they're talking about or jealous that her Senpai gets along so well with Kakyou-chan

On the other hand, that interrogative look from Kakyou-chan is pretty hot

Now that we have an official name from the twitter feed (理系ちゃん), is the current tag for Kakyou-san fine as it is, or should it be Rikei-chan? (Or maybe something else - Google Translate says that 理系 is pronounced "rikei", but I'll leave the actual romanization up to people who know the language properly.)

According to the results of me digging around, rikei is how 理系 is supposed to be pronounced, yes. And I confirmed that Himura actually used this nickname before in post #3477584, so I'm not averse to switching over since it appears he's settled on it as her official name.

... Wait, are we going to call her "Sciences-chan" or "Rikei-chan"? If the former, why pluralize it?

理系 means "science" in the sense of "science-related". So it's like the school course categories: the sciences, the arts, the humanities, etc.

I used "Sciences" to differentiate 理系 from the more specific term for "science", 科学. Since this person is a teacher, presumably one working in the sciences, "Sciences-chan" makes more sense to me.

I'm still partial to the romanized Japanese word "Rikei-chan", as part of a pattern with "Kouhai-chan", "Maegami-chan", "Hokuro-chan", etc. who are all "named" for some characteristic about them. Even Ai-chan, if I recall, is named for her I-cups.

Is it really that specific? Checking Weblio shows me literally zero uses of "sciences" and lots of examples using "science". Also, "sciences" is defined as "all the fields of science collectively", whereas "science" leaves room for the possibility that she's not that comprehensive (which would be extremely and pointlessly unrealistic for her character IMHO) and may in fact be more "specialized" in just a few (most probably related) fields.

I'd be perfectly fine with that. IINM we only translated Announcer-san and Volley-bu-chan's names as English words because the original used English loanwords (in abbreviated form).

Option C: she's jealous that they're drunk and she isn't.

It's her fault that she volunteered to be the sober one.

How about we go more specific. Using her first appearance, we can assume she is in a chemistry related field. Chemistry-chan, Biochem-chan...something like that.

I don't see how what the stuff she's working on with the guy she's tutoring in post #2994395 involves chemistry. Seems like pure mathematics to me. My guess is that whatever she's actually specialized in may not necessarily have anything to do with her tutor job, since she's likely to have a generalist foundation of college-level science (for tutoring someone applying to a university, that is) to begin with.

I said first appearance, the literal first picture she appears in, post #2613416.

I knew that. Ironically, if you'd pay attention to the commentary for that post, it strongly implies that she (at least back when she was first conceived; Himura could've changed her when he eventually re-featured her as a recurring character) is actually specialized in biochemistry or biomedicine rather than simply chemistry.

And I still stand by what I said; she seems to be more of a generalist since Himura brought her back a whole year after her debut as a presumably one-off character with little thought put into her.

Besides, the simpler option is to just call her "Rikei-chan".

    • Sciences-chan (Moonspeaker, Mithiwithi)
    • Science-chan (Moonspeaker, Mithiwithi)
    • Chemistry-chan (zaregoto)

Well, as one of those suggestions is mine, I'm going to be biased. Of the those displayed, I honestly feel that Science or Sciences is the most preferable, if only because "Rikei" is the most recent "official" name the artist has given her, and I prefer translated titles (since these aren't proper names per se) to untranslated.

Mind you, my approach means I'd have used "Tutor" instead of "Kakyou". However, as "Kakyou" has been adopted here more or less as a fait accompli, I suspect "Rikei" will get the same treatment. I don't prefer it, but I can hardly prevent or forbid it.

I'd go with Rikei-chan, as that's literally what he's named her. I believe all other characters are called by romanized versions of his official names? Wanting to call her "Sciences" instead of "Rikei" because rikei isn't as common a word in otaku circles as something like kohai is seems like a poor excuse to not use her "real/official" name. We don't call "Kohai-chan" "Junior-chan", after all.

Yeah, that's pretty much my logic too. The only Tawawa character tags that are translated fall into one of two categories: The name is a Japanese loanword from English (e.g. Trainer-san), or the "name" is just a description of the character's relation to another Tawawa character (e.g. Ai-chan's Sister).

An argument could be made that, unlike the others, "kouhai" is a concept that's specifically Japanese enough to leave in Japanese, since "junior" doesn't really do it justice as a single word. But following that pattern would seem a little odd in some cases - would Maegami-chan be called "Bangs-chan", for example? Would Ai-chan be called "I-chan"? At least "Science(s)-chan" isn't all that weird - although it's more obviously not a name, it is a concept that lends itself well enough to a one-word translation, and it seems a bit less unwieldy to me than, say, "Bangs-chan" (which seems more like it'd be Bangladesh Dupree's good twin or something).

My preferences for this one, in any case, are:
    Rikei-chan
    Sciences-chan
    Science-chan

Added your votes to the list above (along with Moonspeaker's on "Science-chan", since I forgot)... and after reconsideration, I'm retracting mine from "Science-chan". Hindsight is 20/20.

Currently, Rikei-chan is in the lead.

Done... and only just realized that the forum had a "bulk update request" that I could've made use of instead of manually swapping the tag for all 22 posts one by one (then again, it was over pretty fast at an average rate of 2-3 posts per minute).

Theoretically the only thing left is to delete kakyou-san_(tawawa)'s wiki article, but I don't have the user privileges to do that. Obsolete wiki article has been purged thanks to Moonspeaker.
