Quiz Derby was a prominent quiz game show of legendary popularity broadcast on the TBS network from 1976 to 1992. The host, Oohashi Kyosen, created the concept for the program by copying that used on NBC’s Celebrity Sweepstakes. Three teams of contestants placed bets on five participants who answered quiz questions.
A particularly popular regular participant answering the questions was manga comic artist Hara Taira. His uncanny ability to get the answers right led people to question whether he actually was being fed the correct information before the show. (Apparently, he was aided by reading as many as 14 newspapers a day, which he used to gain ideas and up-to-date news material for the regular comic strip that he authored.) Viewers could often hear the contestants say, “All in on Mr. Hara!” nearly every time the final question came around.
