I like to imagine that, the moment your feet stepped on the entrance of the maze, you somehow and suddenly forgot about all the routes of the maze, even if you tried to memorize the correct route before entering.
And once you were "inside" the maze, you somehow wouldn't be able to see pass the "walls" of the maze, while at the same time acknowledging that you normally should've still been able to see the entirety of the maze given that it was in the end still a maze drawn on the ground.
But of course, none of the above will prevent you from cheating anyway.
So whoever is writing the warnings also has problems like this too, huh. Where there's no good warning to give. Maybe I'd write... "Close your eyes and mad dash the next few feet." But even then...
Given the way the messages are smeared out, I kind of suspect the anomaly wiped out the warnings itself. The maze may have been created because it wasn't obviously a warning not to look, but still served the purpose of keeping ones awareness onto the maze and not toward the anomaly.

I was thinking though, the route of the maze has you face the wall for a decent chunk of the length. Why not just design the maze so that you spend as little as time turned towards the anomaly?

No one said the chalk person is infallible, its probably the best they could do.
It would also probably be a bad idea to write "Don't look at the walls" since there's people that would do the opposite out of curiosity or something. Might not even help since it seems most of the friends don't understand English.

It's more thought/attention-based than visual. The maze keeps your attention on the ground and can be understood by English-illiterate Friends. Not sure how the Gachi-stalker can draw the maze without falling victim.
Maybe he gets other Friends to test and leave marks.
• Someone learned if you look at the wall, there's a dangerous thing there. • Those who don't notice the dangerous thing could pass by normally. • They wrote, "Don't look", but for some reason, it didn't work. • They wrote, "Don't notice", but there was no way one wouldn't. • They drew the maze and just wrote "Play". That went well.
Warning people "It's harmless if you don't notice it" is difficult.
I was mistakenly under the impression that the maze is a part of the anomaly, and as long as you're playing with it, the wall will be content and leave you alone.

Why not just knock the lighting out in this part of the hall?
Because who's to say the wall can't see you just because you can't see it?
A less complex maze would be better. Even a simple line. In fact, close your eyes and walk on it. Instruct "no peeking". That way when they do peek, they'll be peeking at the line and not at random.

Same, I thought the "Dont Look/Dont Think" applied to the entire maze, as if completely ignoring it would've spared you the anomaly but once you become aware of it, you've become trapped and have to go through it. Makes it more sinister because I further assumed the anomaly wrote the "Just Play" markings as well.
Huh so basically the maze was somebodies attempt to help future residents.
The maze isn't there as a part of the anomaly or something that will kill you it was setup so that you won't notice the actual anomaly itself which only goes fully active once you pay attention to it.
so this is basically THE GAME (you just lost it) or don't think of polar bears
...But, well.
