    I remember my Game Brick.
Spent so much time playing on it. It went through two busted screens and a wrecked speaker, had been dropped dozens of times by my sister - usually onto hard concrete - and was terrorized by a sick cat, and yet it still played.

One day, it got stolen, and I had to shell out for a Game Boy Color (which also still works to this day).

Thank you, Nintendo, for those days when everything you made was nearly invincible.

Now excuse me while I go cry manly tears.

I know what you mean, mine had a day inside my schoolbag with a opened bottle of suntan lotion which got inside everywhere (easy to tell because mine was the transparent kind) and it still worked fine afterwards...

In fact, I have it right now and it still works...

Haha. When the nuclear winter comes, only two things will stand: roaches, and Game Boys. At least they'll have something to pass the time.

What, the roaches will play GB?

I've had two DS Lites drop on me, and in both cases the right corner with the lights broke off and therefore the hinge was basically rendered useless. Tried to get a replacement case, performed surgery, screwed up the top screen etc. etc.

My GBA SP keeps on tickin'. tho...

After seeing this image, I had to go and dig out my old GB equipment.

My GB Color still works, but my Pocket (bought back when it first came out, over half a lifetime ago) refuses to stay on for more than a second. I spent a good hour opening it up and cleaning various gunk out of it, but to no avail.

    Rest well, true friend ;_;

I remember those days fondly, and now I know that those days will never be relived. We should dedicate ourselves to let the new generations know just how our past meant to us, and how much their's will mean to them.

I don't think kids today will have the chance to play the classic games... I don't know if they fixed this in more recent models, but on the first ds model you can't play gameboy or gameboy color games. I broke my gameboy color, advance, and 2 sp's, so now I can't play the old games anymore :'(

What did you expect? There is people who cant even recognize the first released DS model when they are holding a DS Lite themselves, let alone a Game Boy. Depressing, indeed.

My first handheld console was a GameBoy Pocket because when I got into videogames regular Game Boys werent being sold anymore. I have fond memories of the GBC, the GBA (particularly the GBA SP, but I had both) and the first months of the NDS.

As grateful owner of many Nintendo handhelds, I salute you, Game Boy. Manly tears have been shed, and you will be remembered.

Why on earth is this in the "Soul Crushingly Depressing" pool?

It's a picture of someone holding a battered old Game-boy. This isn't even the slightest bit saddening, let alone DEPRESSING. And soul-crushing? No.

If it's sad for others, that's fine. But don't over-exaggerate.

"This old thing... Heh... Symbol of my childhood right here. I saved princesses, battled terrible monsters, captured amazing creatures and befriended them, and met some amazing people and saw awesome places on my journey. There were a few bumps and bruises but it was one hell of an awesome ride. The music was always good, and I find myself humming a few tunes from time to time."

    "..."

"/sigh/ I'm gonna miss you GB. Thanks for giving me such an awesome childhood. Giving me something to look forward to after coming home from the bullies and the mean kids that used to pick on me for the stuff I liked and the way I looked. Giving me a chance to do things that I'd never get to do normally as a young kid. So just... Thanks for everything."

Just about everything console, game, and accessory I have still works, My GBC actually has always had a bent spring making it hard to put batteries in, I didnt notice this til quite a few years after getting the gba since I always used an adapter, my brother's old gbc works perfectly however

Oh God the Dentist's, I shouldnt bring this up on a nintendo related pic but our family dentist has had a large Genesis display in the waiting room ever since I was young, pretty sure a few games were taken out of it since the beginning, but I still get to play sonic and aladin everytime I go

and when I think about it it was probably a demo cabinet considering how everything was packed together, had a huge SEGA logo on it and came with a switcher so you could push a button to switch games automatically

Haha. When the nuclear winter comes, only two things will stand: roaches, and Game Boys. At least they'll have something to pass the time.

Relatedly, check out the picture to the right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy#Accessories

The only thing tougher then a gameboy is an Atari 2600.

Clean the battery contacts and cartridge connector and that gameboy probably will live again.

If that fails replace the electrolytic capacitors I brought a few vintage devices back from the dead that way.

I broke mine out because of this pic. Only to discover that the contacts for the batteries were corroded beyond repair. Now it sits in a glass case on my mantle. Forever to be remembered and treasured. I wish I could fix it but I'm incompetent with electronics... :(

Ah, `The Brick`. How I adored thee, you played on despite all the abuse shoved at you on a regular basis. Rain, scratches, falls and that one time my brother used it to clonk a kid in the back of the head, and yet you never broke.

I had someone attempt to steal mine back when I was in high school. I think he's still eating out of a straw. You don't mess with another man's Game Boy.

The label has worn off, and the buttons have been smoothed with age from use, but mine still works.

Never had a brick-version (cousin had one though), but I have the original Pocket. After several falls onto hard surfaces, some from over my head, it still works like a charm with one exception: the buttons and D-pad are worn out from countless hours of use.

I tell you though, those things are so tough they could probably survive a carpet-bombing

I saw this and realized to my horror that my Game Boy Pocket, which I haven't touched in 15 years, had it's old batteries in it.

Ran to the basement storage room and sure enough, my GB was packed FULL of leaky battery acid/crust.

Cleaned it all out, put in new batteries, and she fired up like nothing had ever happened...screen and speakers both as clear as the day it was manufactured.

I'm sorry, baby. I'll never do something like that to you ever again.

And this is why I love the Pink Gorilla store (used to be Pink Godzilla) near where I live. They have someone ON STAFF who can resurrect a Gameboy from almost nothing left. I've seen men, grown men, walk in looking like their dog died, and walk out looking like they'd just got the best sex of their lives, holding their fixed Gameboy.

Honestly, even though a DS is far more fragile than a Gamebrick (especially with those camera crap,) it's still the new gamebrick by comparison, given that, A, a slight bump won't outright destroy your game and, B, no memory cards, just all save on cartridge, so if you DO lose or destroy your system, you still have the cards to upgrade from.

    It has one fatal flaw:

    It's screen.

The screen has several issues that'll render it unplayable if it's exposed to too much sunlight over it's life. Just saw that video then checked my old gameboy to see it does have some fading around the edges.

    SADFACE.jpg

The video does note however that some places sell replacement screens, although the only ones I can find on google are for other systems.

Quick! Someone! Get 4 AAs! That (Game)Boy can still be saved!

It really can't. I came across my old GBC a few months ago - hadn't been turned on for at least 20 years (No batteries inside, fortunately). Put in some new batteries, turned it on, but the screen was just faded too much to make out a playable image. Still, nostalgic as heck to hold it in my hands again, with Pokemon Yellow.
