In case anyone doesn't know, it was confirmed by the creators that in the world of Umamusume, there are no actual horses, only horse girls. So in their universe, the kanji for "horse" is changed as above to reflect that the "horses" of their world have 2 legs, not 4.

...then shouldn't the girls just be called "uma", and not "uma musume"? Why are they called "horse girls" if there are no horses in the world they come from?

It's one of those little things that only make sense in a meta context, like various Gundam shows trying to make 'Gundam' an acronym to make the name work.

Should mean then that there are short muscular horse girls from lineages that were bred to work in underground mines.

The term for "umamusume" in Japanese for the series is "ウマ娘." You'll notice that "uma" is written in katakana and not using the kanji for "horse." So while the word translates to "horse girl" from the word meaning, the choice to not use the kanji for "horse" means that they're not exactly "horse girls" in the sense of being literal horses, which makes sense if there ARE no literal horses in their universe. So perhaps in their world the kanji for "horse" was made after the existence of "umamusume" became known. Or perhaps there's other explanations. How language and words are created is an interesting topic that can be discussed in regards to this series.

There are endless speculations as to how their world functioned without actual horses and only "umamusume" since, well, horses were INCREDIBLY important in human history. And as far as we can see in the anime/game, the world of Umamusume is basically the same as ours, just with no horses and with umamusume instead.

But that's not the job of the anime/game to explore. So who knows? Most people aren't going to think too hard and just enjoy the cute girls and amazing racing lol.

Just imagine, Genghis Khan rampaging through Asia and Europe while riding piggyback on his trusted steed, with his battalions of horse riders, all piggybacking on cute horse girls.

In normal Japanese though you have "otoko no hito" / "man person" and "onna no hito" / "woman person" for "man" and "woman" in English. Maybe in universe the "uma" / "horse" acts like "hito" / "person", and distinguishes the "horse girls" from the "horse boys" (maybe "uma musuko") ?

Oof!! I guess I'm going have to put this here

I guess the humans in that world are horse fuckers. Unless the Uma musume reproduce asexually or girl on girl horsey can result in horse pregnancy. Or maybe they have somesort of magic spring or ritual they do to reproduce.

Good grief, what a can of worms that's been opened up.

tbh that will never explained in-game or in the anime how horse lineage were continued on. But it is just for the sake of avoiding certain "trouble" www

Isn't it also part of the lore that horses that die in our world reincarnate as uma-musume in their world? Maybe they just appear fully-formed as part of the reincarnation process and sidestep the problem of needing to be "born" entirely.

Would be hilarious if one of them boinks their head in cliched isekai fashion and suddenly regains all the memories of their past lives. Especially if they were a stallion. ESPECIALLY if they were a successful breeding stud.

For added hilarity make it McQueen. Watch her horror as she wrestles with bodily identity issues (HORSESCHL—*censored*) and the dawning realization that Gold Ship was her grandson. Then...

GolShi: I knew all along, Grampa.
    McQueen: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Umamusume: The Dark Side of the Horse.

Oh come on, the doujin/fanfic practically writes itself!

Did you forget about the part in season 1 Special Week's mother died shortly giving birth to her? Horse girls are born in the universe. The writers just hand waves all these issues, probably didn't even tried to think about it.

Not into the series but I'm just gonna assume the SC char 马 means a horse girl on a skateboard/snowskate then.

You do know how reincarnation works, right? You have to be born to be reincarnated.

I had a brain fart and thought he meant the "materialized out of nowhere" method of isekai. Whoops.

For clarification, I don't follow this show at all, I just saw a meme on Tumblr about "Umamusume is an isekai for horses" and made a shot-in-the-dark guess based on that.

Actually, its true IRL too, with additional details on Special Week adopted mother is the women who hand-reared Special Week too. in many ways, some of the history in Uma Musume uses RL race records as inspiration along with stable hands account on the horse which is also the reason why Stay Gold has not made appearance.

The actual kanji for "horse" (while the following three are fictional). The character is derived from a pictogram of a horse showing a flowing mane, legs evolving into four dots.
竹 (take) means bamboo. By the way, bamboo stilts are called "take-uma" in Japanese.
The "horse" kanji as it appears in the franchise (especially the anime). As there are horse girls but no actual horses in the world of Umamusume, there are only two dots instead of four, presumably representing a running horse girl with flowing hair.
Continuing by that logic, more legs means more dots. There would be eight dots if horses had eight legs like say, Sleipnir. The style of running here is typical of the comedy anime of the 70-80s, which Maruzensky is solidly in.
