    This is some kind of propaganda, likely spread by the so-called 50 cent party across social media. Here is an example, notice how all the comments are 'white' first names + random numbers appended saying similar things in broken English.

    As far as I can tell Yan limeng perpetuated the idea that China bio engineered the Coronavirus to be harmful to humans and spread it to other countries. This claim was unsubstantiated but racists took it and ran with it.

    If anything, Yan was probably just an eventual face to attach to the allegation. Even as far back as February 2020, I remember reading suggestions that a laboratory caused the outbreak in some Reddit topics and that was some time before Yan. The proper origin of the allegation is probably a "it makes as much sense" theorycrafting by people trying to figure out how to make sense of China's uncooperative response and what it did or didn't do. The media struck it down with the intensity that it did in the crossfire of their attempt to play up China's expertise in handling the problem against their lambasting of President Trump's handling of the virus. And now we're finally coming back to it being a possibility again (CDC), even though it was derided so.

    To her credit, whether or not she was just spinning her own lies, most people possibly didn't know that there was a laboratory conveniently in the same region as the accredited wetmarket when the theories frist cropped up, or that it had been conducting virology research within at least the last few years before the outbreak (in the wetmarket) before Yan.
