Furrets can learn electric moves through TM and HM, that can give'em the upper hand against water and flying types... and Gyarados is water and flying (x4 weakness against thunder).

On the other hand Gold is totally doomed, if the Gyarados doesn't eat him, he'll likely be zapped by his own Furret. ^^
