IIRC... male animals who got sandstar'd become female(-looking) humanoids but still retain most of their original secondary sex characteristics, right? Like manes and antlers and plumes and stuff.
(AKA most of the Friends based on animals whose male members are far more recognizable like lions and deer.)
Edit: Huh... apparently peahens can sometimes suddenly develop male plumage and start strutting about and crowing like a male. If it happens, it usually happens to older peahens, and they will stop laying eggs. Theory goes peafowl by default have male plumage and male-like behavior but these are suppressed by female hormones (estrogen, mainly). Accordingly, if the ovaries start malfunctioning then estrogen levels drop and the peahen starts 'reverting' to being male-like.
(Note also that generally mammals are by 'default' female [XX chromosomes] but birds are by 'default' male [ZZ chromosomes].)
Doubt this was what the artist had in mind... but interesting factoid nonetheless.
