I'd think you'd want to be the hero...
And pretty much when I play DQIII I use all the classes except Merchant and Jester. Though if we were talking about being there in person...I'd most likely have to pick a Jester...
Oh, its so much easier in later games when your classes weren't so limited in skills and clothing.

Uh...in DQIII, the hero recruits the other three party members and is the one who is ultimately the party needs to protect.
I understand what you're trying to say, but ultimately you're saying you want to replace the Cleric in importance. That's pretty pointless when you can become the hero, which is the head of the party and already the focus of protection.
And really, who cares. If we take the joke to its logical climax, it doesn't matter who's the most important as long as you're the only guy in the party.
