Good god, I hate the art in One Piece. It'd be fine if not for the gigantic mouths and teeth. I mean, the rest of the proportions are fine (when they're meant to be). Some noses are also an issue.

A lot of people complain about off-proportions, but it usually doesn't bother me, especially if the style is distinct. It's not a matter of realism, it's a matter of displaying what the artist means to display.

Yes, a lot of One Piece characters are totally ugly. But usually, they're supposed to be. So I'm cool with it.

Cause God forbid there's an anime/manga which actually goes against the "everyone look bishie NOW!" rule most shows follow, in favor of the greatest and most epic storyline ever and AWESOME characters with incredibly touching/exciting stories, right?

You need to grow up kid, and start learning how to appreciate whats truly great instead of being all "lol eye-candy! GIMMIE!"

I'm not a huge fan of One Piece, but I like the artwork.
It is a fun style to draw in (actually did fanart at one point).

It is a break from the typical style that you associate Japanese animation with.

no, i believe it's just some scenes where they've cryed placed together.

I rather like One Piece's style. The large mouths greatly convey expression, and the unique, often shocking proportions of face and body grab the reader's attention.

Those are their most important scenes in OP (or really important/sad). Zoro when he said he'd never lose again until he met with Mihawk again, Nami when she asked Luffy to help her with Arlong, Robin when she said she wanted to live, and I'm not entirely sure about the others. Chopper could be when he joined the crew near the castle, Sanji when he said goodbye to Baratie people and Usopp when he disbanded his little crew on his native island...

Ages ago, when One Piece was released in my coutry, I looked at the cover and tought "What an ugly character, such a weird drawing will certailny have a bad story..."
Yeah. I did.
Than, one day, some weeks later, I was bored was at a comic shoop. I took the first volume and read the first chapter.
I can say for sure I was never so troughly proven wrong.
And liked to be so.
The art is not bad, it is different, and you grow to like it a lot.
The story... No need to comment, right? XP

Yeah, that is how alot of one piece fans started. Proof you can't judge a book by it's cover!

Listening to anime fans respond negatively to Oda's art style is like hearing non-anime fans respond the typical anime art style. You guys do realise that 99% of all anime art looks fucking weird, right? We're just used to the mass of stuff that looks similar but the more unique stuff, like Oda's, really stands out to us. Sure Oda's characters have big mouths, but most anime characters have eyes so big they have the facial proportions of a grasshopper, not a human.

And I'll take big funny mouths over the typical asshole-sized mouth of most anime characters any day. The girls often lusted after by anime fanboys usually have eyes bigger than their palms and a head:body ratio akin to a very thin toddler.

This is an interesting article about how the anime art style (more specifically moe stuff) is actually grotesque. It's linked to an art movement known as "superflat". I think the whole article is interesting but at least read the 6th paragraph on the second page, here:

The art in One Piece doesn't bother me at all, but I absolutely hate the proportions in xxxHolic. So disgusting.

I actually like xxxHolic art. I used t be bothered by Crayon Shin-Chan's art...

I think Oda knows exactly what he's doing with OP. However, I can appreciate a bit of hyper-realism more often than not, so I go elsewhere for that sort of thing. I like OP for what it is, but the circle-jerking is a little much, no?
