I lol'd. To be fair, most anime men are drawn with features that are actually female (e.g. large eyes, small nose) so genderwapping isn't that much of a big deal, You never really end up with something like Hulk Hogan with Pamela Anderson's body. In other words, anime/manga artists tend to just draw female faces on male bodies to begin with (a la Shinji Akari).

In the famous (to One Piece fans) fake spoiler showing female cop Luffy, it's basically just Luffy's face with a female body and, if you didn't know the character already, you'd just assume it was always meant to be a girl rather than a genderswap. I'll upload it actually, though the mods may delete it since it's just a (pretend) single panel from a manga page.

    ... It wont.

Is anyone else getting bored with the fact that anime creators have absolutely no sense of moderation when it comes to character design? It seems that these days it's either super macho or super cute/moe. There's got to be a happy medium. Anime never used to have this problem back in the 80's and even 90's. What happened?

Well you're sort of right, but anime has always had males with massive eyes with a tiny mouth and tiny nose. Just look at Astro Boy - he looks like a girl in the face; in fact, like Betty Boop with a round head. Look at older stuff like DBZ, Ranma, Sailor Moon, Gundam etc and the males still have massive eyes with really small other facial features.

NGE is a classic 90s anime and its male lead has been admitted to just be Nadia's face with short hair and a male body; basically, Nadia cross-dressing. I think that the companies have definitely homed in on moe as a sort of business practice rather than just an art style nowadays, but the fact that almost all anime men basically have girls' faces on mens' bodies has always been the case.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that many of the males are actually voiced by females. like luffy, naruto and the kamehame guy

Or it could be that there are only five faces.

Hell, half the time they have girls' bodies too, just without the breasts...

I'll answer everyone's question about modern anime/manga right here right now.

Adult main cast are dying out. And i dont mean just physical age, i'm talking mental age as well. I'm not saying they are extinct(Yet?) but they are certainly dying. Back in the 80s and 90s you can see that diffenetly a larger portion of the shows did feature adult non-emo well thinking adults.

But sadly, whats "IN" right now is the middle school or highschool main protagonist.(With Harem included)

    Case and point.
    we went from this

    to this
    http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3704

I died on the inside watching my childhood show get totally face-lifted and Brainwashed.

"No one" wants to see a level-headed protagonist anymore actually get shit done.
