Though it makes me wonder, why does this artist use Haruhi and Kyon? They're so detached from their usual personalities and characteristics it would seem more prudent to just use some original characters.

My guess is because so much of their usual interaction is based on more or less bouncing snarky remarks off each other up to a point that portraying them as somewhat "grown out of it" allows for a tad more interpretation on what they'd act like when someday when they're truly more comfortable with each other (at least judging by moments in earlier strips I'm assuming this is set some number of years after the series).

I don't know if it's been specified anywhere, but the title of this series, "Dousei" means "Cohabitation" (or "Shacking Up" if you prefer). It has the specific connotation of an unmarried couple living together.

I've been thinking the same thing. This series is cute and all, but Haruhi it ain't. Their personalities are completely divorced from canon.

It seems like a pretty reasonable take on them assuming they both actively lust after each other rather than Mikuru.
