In short, Gantz is a mysterious black ball that brings people on the brink of death into a room, and from there they're forced to kill aliens. The only way for them to leave is to successfully kill enough aliens and earn their way out. This series is extremely violent and sometimes contains quite explicit moments in terms of nudity, so Gantz isn't quite for everyone. I think that for the most part though, the characters are quite likable and ingtriguing (although you don't know if they're gonna live through the next chapter or not) and they really draw you in. I do recommend giving the manga a try.
After going on an archive binge reading GANTZ just to understand what the heck is going on, I believe this is paralleling the Chiba mission... But the character fits are odd to say the least. I'm assuming that Alice = Reika at this point.

I must admit first that I haven't seen any Gantz, but if anyone would like to say it's awesome like this, I will watch it immediately.
It's even more awesome, if that's possible.
However, you have to be RAGE proof to watch it. Basically, each group that dies is charismatic, with well-defined personalities and a perfect synergy with everyone else... and they almost always DIE (for real, as in, the character never ever comes back) IN THE SAME FUCKING MISSION OH GOD WHAT THE SHIT

That's because the anime's 2 seasons were put together very quickly and the manga is still ongoing even though it is very far between new chapters...
