No reason to start up any fantasy vs reality discussions. It's merely an amusing observation, and I will accept it as such. Also, I really love Growlithe. Hell yeah!
Thing is, that's a somewhat traditional katana sheath. The sword in the picture is clearly some form of a claymore, if anything (note the double-handed grip).
It is possible that it's a Dai-katana, massive Katana's designed to combat mounted warriors. Think sephiroth's sword, a good example of such a weapon, of course their weight made their use and movement patterns extremely limited.
