I've never understood the concept of opening the door for your spouse. Doesn't the spouse usually have their own key? A normal situation would be just opening the door and then saying "I'm home" or something.

It's quite lengthy to explain, but basically it boils down to japanese custom back to ancient era. One of higher rank should never have to open the door theirself, and that extends to husband-wife relation.

Not to mention, japanese doors usually comes installed with latchlocks or chainlocks, meaning you can't get inside even if you have a key...unless you're skilled with your hands.
