Hidden behind the sci-fi, fantasy, and generic high school story-line... It's a harem anime. Setting up the thinned possibility that Kyon might be set up with someone else in your mind.

And he's even said himself that he's closer to Yuki, has spent more time with her than both Haruhi or Mikuru. He even starts to get jealous over her in Volume 6.

Do note that A) Mikuru insists on distance due to her being from the future and B) Haruhi's Haruhi; nuff said. Yuki is the easiest to get close to... and Kyon feels concerned for her since despite all her abilities she's starting to develop tender feelings.

He has good reason to worry: Haruhi feaking out would most likely mean the end of the world.
