It's shown on the first opening PV where Shiroko woke up that her halo's turning on, and later on when we first meet Aris/Arisu her halo didn't light up until she's awakened. There's also other places where you can see a student's halo turning off...but it's spoilery.

You can also see it in certain in-game café animations - for example, when Hinata is sleeping on the couch, she has no halo, but when she briefly wakes up, her halo flashes back on.
