    ...Well, that's certainly, a fate worse than death.

    That's essentially how a bunch of people died in the Great Molasses Flood in Boston in 1919.

    I think he meant it as an irony. Hornet breaks into bee hives in order to eat bee larva, bee itself and honey, and these particular hornets essentially dying from honey overload is the very essence of ironic death.
